About this site

offentliga.se explains who does what in Sweden and links you to the right organisation. It is privately run and not a government agency.

You cannot apply for anything on this site. You do that with the agency, region or municipality that is responsible.

Who does what in Sweden

Public services in Sweden are run at 3 levels. You often get help from more than one of them at the same time.

The state

Government agencies for the whole country

  • Tax and population registration
  • Parental benefit, child allowance and sickness benefit
  • Pensions
  • The Public Employment Service
  • Student finance
  • The police

Regions

21 regions, one in each county

  • Health centres and hospitals
  • Dental care for children and young people
  • Public transport in most counties
  • Healthcare advice on 1177

Municipalities

290 municipalities, where you live

  • Preschool and school
  • Care for older people and home help
  • Social services and financial support
  • Support for disabled people
  • Building permits

Municipalities and regions decide a lot for themselves. The law says what they all must offer, and many offer more. This means the same kind of help can be different depending on where you live.

On Gotland, the municipality also does what the region does in other counties.
